INFORMATION

FontID: 05016RIC
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Church/Chapel: [Parish Church]
Country Name: Switzerland
Location: Thurgau
Font Location in Church: Inside the church
Date: 1603
Century and Period: 17th century(early), Renaissance
Cognate Fonts: The font at Pfyn, in the same canton, is dated slightly later and its ornamentation is different, but it has exactly the same shape and even bears a Biblical inscription at the upper basin side like the font at Rickenbach.
Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Schätze des Glaubens (1999: 129) as a hexagonal font dated to 1603. There is long inscription around the basin side, at the rim, and continuing on the basin side motifs, with a text from the New Testament (John 3, 5) followed by the name of an abbot "Gallus Secundus, Sancti Galli abbas" [this Gallus was abbot of St. Gall from 1654 to 1687, according to the same source]. Each of the basin sides [only three visible in the source] has a large motif: the front one appears to be the arms of abbot Gallus, and is right under his name in the inscription; to its right, Jesus' monogram in a wreath; to its left, an Agnus Dei with flag. The upper part of the base has a chain-like pattern, while the lower part is ornamented with stylised foliage (?) motif. [Reference is given in the source above as "Inventarnummer 4751.1603"]. [NB: we are grateful to Ursula Tschan for bringing this source to our attention]
