Font Notes:
There is an entry for Newent [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SO7225/newent/] [accessed 6 December 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Four pieces of what one was a baptismal font adorn different areas of a private garden in the town of Newent. The proprietor acquired these objects when he bought the house in 1980 and did not manage to find out the provenance of the font from the previous owner. The four pieces of sandstone, two of which are very worn and serve now as an elegant planter [cf. Images], show still enough shape to be identified as the four pieces of an octagonal baptismal font; the sides of the broken basin are totally worn but may once have had ornamentation; the remaining pieces show only horizontal mouldings. The Parish Church of St. Mary has a late font consisting of a hemispherical basin decorated with a large moulding at the upper rim and with foliage from the underbowl up the sides; raised on a cylindrical stem decorated with a cloth garland; the wooden cover is round and flat [cf. Index entry for Newent No.1].
