Sotomayor (1963) notes three admirable holy-water stoups of very large size, carved in a characteristically indigenous style which alternates with Christian monograms; he points out that their cylindrical shape is a clear reference to the pre-Hispanic 'cuauhxicalli', the vessel used for the offering of the human hearts to the deities. [cf. Index entry for Tecali No. 1 for details of one of these stoups]. Monolithic stoup of the late 16th century; the basin is roughly cylindrical; the upper rim has rope motif and a narrow band of foliage below it; the visible part of the basin side shows three circles, the two on the sides have heraldic themes while the centre one -held like a mandorla by a reclining angel on each side- contains Christ's initials; the underbowl is slightly rounded and has large rib motif; the base is round and plain with two roll mouldings close to the top. One of the motifs, a jade roundel, referred to as "chalchíhuitl" or "chalchihuite", is recognised in Reyes-Valerio (2002) as a pre-Columbian symbol for something precious and was often represented with the wounds of Christ and his blood.
