Listed in Mackeprang (1941) as a baptismal font of the Himmerland-Mariagertypen, Mariagergruppen-C, to with the fonts at Gassum and Øster Hornum. Mackeprang (ibid.) suggests that the font, for its similarity with pillar bases at Vigor Domkirke, may have been coarved by the same master [NB: the early part of Viborg cathedral is usually dated ca.1130]. Noted and illustrated in Søren Kaspersen's Jyske fonte med modstillede løver.[1] Et præliminært studie, 17.8.2016 klo 23.15 | Tieteelliset artikkelit | TAHITI 04/2016 [https://tahiti.journal.fi/article/view/85640/44590] [accessed 16 November 2023]. Noted and illustrated in the Aalborg Stift web site [http://aalborgstift.dk/kirker/rebild/stenild-kirke/dobefont/] [accessed 8 August 2016]. Illustrated and briefly described in Benzon (1973: 226-rettelsesblad) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period; he typifies it as "Løvefont", [lion-font]. The granite font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin raised on a round-to-square (?) squat base decorated with mouldings and spurs; there are two pairs of lions on the sides of the basin; the heads of these lions are more or less feline in shape, but the have human mustaches and their tongues stick out markedly; their manes are elaborate and shaped like those of the lions on the fonts of the 'Mariagergruppen-A' (Hov, Kastbjerg, Skjellerup, etc.); floral-shaped tail ends; lions not in threatening stances; one of the lions appears to be couchant; between the lion heads are three 'floating' human heads; two of them are male, with long hair, mustaches and beards; one is beardless and with short hair, perhaps either a youth or a female; all their countenance are inexpressive. The carving is expert and in very high relief. The general feel of the font, added to the shape of the inner well of the basin suggest a later date, perhaps even in the 13th century.
