Noted in Mackeprang (1941). Listed and illustrated in Danmarks Kirker [http://danmarkskirker.natmus.dk/uploads/tx_tcchurchsearch/Soroe_0588-0600.pdf] [accessed 6 December 2024] as a baptismal font made of Gotland limestone in the 12th century; the DK entry identifies the scenes on the basin sides and the elements represented on the base [cf. infra]. Mentioned by Ljungman (1993) as having some similarities with the font at Knislinge in Sweden. Described and illustrated in the Nordens Kirker web site [www.nordenskirker.dk/Tidligere/Braaby_kirke/braaby_kirke.htm] [accessed 23 March 2014] [summary of Danish text]: font of Gotland limestone dating to the late 1100s.; of similar design to fonts by Sighraf on Gotland and Bornholm, but the details are unique, suggesting that the reliefs were executed by a local Zealand master or workshop. Basin has Adoration of the Magi, Presentation at the Temple, angels, devil, horses (one with avian on it; another with a head next to it); on the base: figure wearing fur-trimmed garment, enthroned bishop, masks, snake body, woman with serpents at her breasts, Luxuria; deer hunt may refer to St. Hubert or to the legend of St. Eustace/Estatius / Didrik [Theoderic the Great? Dietrich von Bern?] finding a stag with a cross between its antlers; the three horses could belong to the Magi, byt the avian on the one poses questions on the identification; the Presentation at the Temple is reminiscent of the Byzantine version, with Christ-child in a chalice, symbol of baptism. The font in Bråby links worship and baptism in a unique iconography. This same source suggests that suckling of Luxuria's breats here does not relate to evil, but part of the baptism symbology, being the womb in which the baptised are reborn [an interesting connexion]. On the iconography of the base this source notes that the font becomes baptism symbol of Jesus ' death and resurrection. The cross as the life-giving tree that grows into heaven seen in several contexts, and suggests further reading of interpretations in Søren Krogh Nancke's 'Stenbilleder', and in Mackeprang. On the figures of the base this source notes: the three towering figures could be church fathers; the man with the bishop wand could be Ambrose; Jerome could be the man with the cross and book; the third enthroned figure may be more difficult to interpret and could be a king, perhaps Solomon. On-site notes: on the basin (L->R): 1)angel; 2)angel, king [Eustace?] with bow & arrow; 3)deer with cross between antlers; 4)lion [or demonic beast?] with tongue sticking out; 5)saddled horse by tree; 6)saddled horse has [Eustace?] eagle or falcon on saddle; 7)saddled horse has a 'floating' human head or mask next to it; 8)three Kings with swords and gifts; 9)three figures [the Magi?]: a)centre figure is haloed; b)left figure appears female with braids, and holds up one arm of the centre figure; c)right figure appears male, and holds up the other arm of the centre figure. On the square base (L->R): corner1)seated monk with cross; side1)four-legged eagle-like fantastic avian beast; corner2)robed monk?; side2)winged tree (?) made up of antropomorphic elements; corner3)bishop holding staff and open book; side3)serpent; corner4)Luxuria; side4)serpent. The font is now mounted on a later lower base, and is located at the northeast corner of the nave, just west of the chancel arch.
