There are four entries for Burrough [-on-the-Hill] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK7510/burrough-on-the-hill/] [accessed 3 September 2015], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. A font here is noted and illustrated in Upcott (1818). Described and illustrated in Simpson (1828): "although taken altogether this Font is very handsome, yet the sculpture is rude"; Simpson lists it as Early English but notes that "here the Norman style was yet lingering", referring to the foliage motif around the upper rim side [NB: Simpson uses the spelling "Burrow" for this locality]. Noted in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 as "a very ancient circular font". Illustrated in Rickman & Parker [drawing by Orlando Jewitt] (1881)] as a baptismal font of the Early English period and dated from ca. 1250; the rounded basin is decorated with an arcade of Gothic arches with a fleur de lis at each spandrel; inside the arches human heads alternate with floral motifs; at the upper rim a vine all around; at the lower end, a thin band of dog-tooth motif. The base is shaped like a cluster of columns forming an octagonal pedestal with a vertical row of dog-tooth motif on each side. The plinth is octagonal and has dog-tooth motif all around. The illustration shows a metal loop for the cover still present at the mouth of the round inner well. Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a noteworthy baptismal font of the Early English period, in which "the dog-tooth ornament appears [...], not only between the grouped shafts of the stem of the font, but round the edge of the octagonal step, a most unusual feature". [NB: there is a confusing entry in C&H's listing: entries for both "Barrow-on-the-Hill" and "Burrough" appear under the Early English period. Their illustration on p. opposite 206 has the caption "Barrow-on-the-Hill", yet it is the same font illustrated in Simpson and Richman & Parker as the font at Burrow -or Burrough]. Bond (1908) describes the font at Burrough as a "sister font" of the one at Leicester All Saints'. In Tyrrell-Green (1928) as Early English with a clustered-columns base. The Victoria County History (Leicestershire, vol. 5, 1964) notes: "The church at Burrough was given, perhaps by Robert Grimbald, to Owston Abbey shortly after its foundation and before 1166. [...] The oldest parts of the church probably date from the early 13th century, and a round-headed lancet window in the south wall of the chancel may indicate a date as early as 1200. [...] The font is a fine example of the early 13th century. It consists of a bulbous circular bowl decorated with a band of foliage, below which is a row of pointed arches filled alternately with masks and rosettes. The stem has ten engaged shafts, the alternate vertical mouldings between them being enriched with dog-tooth ornament. A dog-tooth moulding also decorates the circular base." Noted in Pevsner (1984): "Font. E[arly] E[nglish] with ten shadts and dogtooth between and at the bottom. Crude tapering circular bowl with arches, heads, etc., much coarse stiff-leaf, and a trail above."
