Buck (1951) notes "a tall slender edition of the Early English type, installed when the church was restored in 1862". Pevsner & Cherry (1975), howver: "Font. Norman, circular, with a band of arrowheads. Transferred from Imber. - Modest C17 font cover." "The canopied Norman Font came from the Church of St. Giles at Imber. It was presented to St. Michael's in 1951, when Imber village was finaly absorbed into the military field firing area." [http://ds.dial.pipex.com/town/avenue/pd49/pockets/places/deverill/deverill.htm]. [NB: it is likely that the cover is also from Imber, since the Imber font had a 17th-century wooden cover according to Arthur Mee (1939)]. A local source (e-mail from Ruth Underwood, 12 August 2008) informs: "The Norman font (circa 1060) from St Giles Church, Imber, was removed in 1951 (following the evacuation of the village for military training in 1943) to the church of St Michael the Archangel at Brixton Deverill in Wiltshire." -- [see also the Index entry for Imber]
