Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a plain octagonal baptismal font made of Purbeck marble. Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: Octagonal bowl, stem and plinth, both plinth and under edge of bowl hollow-chamfered, 14th or 15th-century." Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as one in a very large group of baptismal fonts that are plain octagonal with straightsided basins. Described in Hutton (1957) as "a plain octagonal Purbeck font, said to be Norman but probably 14C D[ecorated]." [NB: the church fabric goes back to the Norman period, but we have no information on the earlier font]
