Noted in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874): "The font is octagon, on octagon shaft of Purbeck marble, with two trefoil-headed niches in each." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. In Long (1923). Mee (1939) notes: "The bowl of the massive font was made from a wayside cross." In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. An enormous, uncouth square block with top spurs. Low Perp[endicular] stem, panelled." In The Dorset Historic Churches Trust [http://dorsethistoricchurchestrust.co.uk/], where it is noted that the basin "was almost certainly made from the great stone of a wayside Cross. The references are all coy about giving it a date." Described by Hutton (1976) as a composite baptismal font "probably made of a standing/cross stone for a bowl, on a D[ecorated] Purbeck pillar from another font." The Church Plans Online/ICBS web site [www.churchplansonline.org] shows the church plan for St. Gregory's and notes the re-siting of the font.
