There are two entries for Bugthorpe [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SE7757/bugthorpe/] [accessed 27 July 2014], neither of which mentions a church or cleric in it. A font here is listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Transitional period [1150-1200]. Hutton (1957) describes it as Early English [1190-1250]. Unfortunately this font has been re-tooled on many of its surfaces, so we do not know what its original look was; the inner surface of the basin still shows the striation of the original carving but, even there, low on one of the sides, the initails WP were added, and the new lead lining covers only the botom 1/3 or so of the well; the upper rim shows clear signs of re-tooling and repairs; on the outer side, at the upper level, the round moulding appears original but the row of nail-head below is too small and even for the period; the underbowl has also been re-cut. The base appears original and almost untouched. A flat wooden cover, circular and with metal decoration and handle, appears relatively modern.
