Scene Description: Source caption: "St Edith, Coates by Stow. But for a farmhouse, barns and trees, the church of St Edith stands alone and well off the beaten track. The church contains the only surviving Rood Loft in Lincolnshire. It is of Norman origin, having brass plates and other memorials of the BUTLER family and a bust of Brian COOKE of Doncaster, who died in 1653 at age 80. The Church was restored in 1883 and seats about 80."

Church Notes: The interior of this little church is much as it was in medieval times and has some rare features. Described by Peter Fairweather as "A most beautiful little Norman church, full of nothing but peace and atmosphere! One of my favourites in Lincs." (e-mail to BSI dated March 2002)
Font Notes:
No individual entry for Coates-by-Stow found in the Domesday survey. Hutton (1957) describes and illustrates a plain cylindrical font of the Norman period here; it has some damage on the upper rim. It sits on a square base which is obviously ill-matched to the base and probably the work of the local mason. There is a flat octagonal lid made of wood with some ornamentation (date unknown). An illustration of this font, in the context of a study of the rood-screen at St Edith's, appears in Charles Tracey's chaper in the book 'Cardiff: architecture and archaeology in the medieval diocese of Llandaff' (2006).
