Described in Lasteyrie (1926-1927) as a holy-water stoup which matches the type and ornamentation of those of the 15th century. On of two holy-water stoups listed in Palissy in Clamecy St-Martin; this one, [ref.: PM58000135]: "Bénitier en forme de mortier [...] fonte de fer [...] 16e siècle". M. Mirault [www.gennievre.net/wiki/index.php5/Eglise_Clamecy] [accessed 6 September 2013] notes: "bénitier en fonte de la fin du XVIè siècle , portant un écu à un rais d'escarboucle (de Clèves?)". The metal bucket-shaped stoup has a wide flat moulding at the upper basin side with a triangular shield(?) in which is a raised sun-like motif; a pair od thin mouldings at the middle and two more near the bottom; there are two handle-like protrusions in the middle, at opposite ends; the cast-iron basin is raised on a round pedestal in the shape of a fluted column with mouldings at both ends. [NB: the arms of Clèves tend to be more complex than the motif on this stoup, usually a shield with a gold centre from which explode eight long and golden fleur-de-lis in a red background. Perhaps the limitations of size and casting forced the over-simplification?]
