Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Uranga & Iñiguez (1973) where it is dated to the 13th century. Described and illustrated in Domeño (1992). Medieval baptismal font; the hemispheric basin is ornamented with incised ribbed pattern; [NB: Domeño describes the base as a cylindrical stem topped by a capital ornamented with stylised leaf motif; that should have been the order of things -and it was, since Uranga's illustration of ca. 1973 (?) shows the pedestal in the right position with the leaf capital right under the undebowl of the basin. At present [ca. 1992] , however, the leaf capital is at the bottom and the font has an odd-look, like a puzzle of not-well-matched pieces; it is obvious that the leaf capital should have been at the top and the square moulding with ball at the angles should have been at the bottom. The description in the Catálogo Monumental de Navarra (1990?) is correct]. Bilbao (1996) mentions reticular pattern ornamentation on this font; there is none. The Enciclopedia del románico en Navarra (2008) remarks on the "seudocapitel" that serves as base, and that it is similar to the one in nearby church of San Esteban in Berriozar. This latter source (ibid.) adds that local sources in this town have memory of an earlier font that was located in the northwest corner, under the west gallery;that lost font was in the style of the fonts at the churches of Aldaba, Azoz and Berriozar, but it was replaced in the 1950s or 1960s by one made of marble; both these fonts were later lost (?) and the church made do with the holy-water stoup, which is the object used as font nowadays.
