Described and illustrated in Gischia (1939) as a former altar hollowed out and re-used as baptismal font; quadrangular in shape at the top, it has a plain vertical rim under which are human figures at the corners and human and animal heads on the sides; most of the humans have negroid features; one of the animal heads could be that of a bovine, while two others, their bodies almost invisible now, appear to be lions with their tails linked in an interlace. The Hauteroche municipal site [https://www.hauteroche.fr/le-village-son-eglise-son-chateau] [accessed 28 March 2024] that only the stone plinth of the 11th-12th century font remains in the church, in the lower-left area of the nave, the font itself having been transferred to the Musée National de St Germain en Laye in 1878 "dans des circonstances plus ou moins obscures". The same source [https://www.hauteroche.fr/le-blason-le-baptistere] [accessed 28 March 2024] notes and illustrates the medieval font carved out of an 11th-century altar: "Un autel évidé du XIème siècle orné de sculpture d’hommes et d’animaux était installé dans l’église d’Hauteroche (21150) jusque dans les années 1880. The original font [in a museum since 1878] is noted and illustrated in Fondation de Patrimoine [https://www.fondation-patrimoine.org/les-projets/objets-mobiliers-eglise-de-hauteroche] [accessed 28 March 2024], during the funding campaign for the restoration of the church and the creation of a replica of the baptismal font: "Le projet : restaurer [...] les œuvres d'art de l'église Saint-Aubin [...] News of a replica copy being made of the original 11th-century font appeared in an article by Chantal Blancher, 3 November 2023, in Le Bien Public [https://www.bienpublic.com/culture-loisirs/2023/11/02/l-eglise-saint-aubin-retrouve-ses-fonts-baptismaux] [accessed 28 March 2024]: "Une réplique du baptistère du XIe siècle de l’église d’Hauteroche, si original et si surprenant par ses motifs primitifs, sera à l’honneur dans les prochains jours. The same source notes that the replica copy was installed in the local parish church.
