Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in the Catálogo Monumental de Navarra (1990?- , vol. IV*: 3 and pl. 1) as a medieval baptismal font; the hemispherical basin is plain except for a column-less blind arcade of round arches at the upper end of the basin sides; the base is prismatic, probably modern. Described [and illustrated -- cf. NB below] in Domeño (1992: 131): as a Romanesque baptismal font. There has been a major modification made to the interior of the basin well: the space now appears divided into several smaller compartments: one half of the well is divided into thre smaller ones (for holy oils, etc.), while the other is not [damage has been caused to the upper rim and to the top of the arcade of the side in the alteration]. Domeño's description mentions a round-arch arcade ornamenting the top of the basin sides ["hilera de arcos de medio punto"] but the illustration (pl. 161, p. 132) shows the sides of the basin as totally plain [NB: plate 161, p. 132, has been mislabelled as Abaurrea Alta but corresponds to the font at Abaurrea Baja -- We are grateful to Montserrat Estela, Barcelona, Spain, for pointing out the error and for the images of this font].
