Described and illustrated in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as an octagonal mounted baptismal font of the Perpendicular period; the panels of the basin are ornamented with shields bearing "the arms of de Warren, with those of related families and the shield of England"; foliage and other motifs on the chamfer and on the stem of the base. Plain lower base. Described in Hubbard (1986): "each face of the bowl, the stem and the coving is carved in boldly scaled relief. Datable to c. 1493 by the heraldry, which refers to the history of the lordship of Bromfield over two centuries." Described and illustrated in Crossley (1941) where it shows that the main shields appear around the basin, while the chamfer of the underbowl has carvings of human figures and animals; the sten has either a large foliage motif or a human figure holding a shield on its sides. Described and illustrated by Peter Lord, in Diwylliant... (1998-2003), who uses this font to illustrate patronage and the vagaries of power: "Sir William Stanley, who rose under Edward IVand maintained his position under Henry VII by playing a crucial military role at Bosworth Field, remodelled the Church of St Chad at Holt in Denbighshire. He encrusted the font with heraldic devices illustrating the history of the lordship of Bromfield, which he had held from 1843. When newly coloured it must have been an extraordinary sight, even by the riotous chromatic standards of the day, but Stanley had little time to enjoy the fruits of his munificence. Twelve years later he was executed for treason by the king he had helped to bring to power". Lord (ibid., fn4) informs that "Sir William Stanley was accused of involvement in the uprising of Perkin Warbeck". The font stands on a modern polygonal plinth. Wooden cover, round, flat and plain; modern.
