A church at "Gretford" is reported in the Domesday survey. The present baptismal font is described in Hubbard (1986) as having its basin panels ornamented with "the Virgin and Child the lion of St Mark, saints and angels. Ribbed patterns below and cusped panels in the stem"; dates it to the late-15th century. The font and its iconographic programme are studied in detail in Gray (2013). [NB: we have no information on the font from the 11th-century church here].
