Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a Norman font decorated with a zigzag or chevron motif on the panels of the basin. Described in Newman (1995) as a 12th-century "mighty tub encircled with six rows of zigzag." Orrin (1988) notes: "The Norman font is barrel-shaped and decorated with six rows of large chevron moulding in a continuous pattern. There is no base or stem and the font rest upon some modern stonework. Its size provides ample evidence for the practice of total immersion of the infant". Thurlby (2006) writes: "The cylindrical form of the St Lythans' font may lack the elegant lines of the St Athan's goblet but it makes up for that with no less than six rows of chevron ornament." The base on which the monolithic basin is raised is made of stone blocks. Low-dome cover with ring-handle.
