Notable pulpit in this church. Described in Newman (1995): "A highly remarkable late medieval piece, of Stone. It is carved with a relief of the Flagellation, crudely dramatic. Vine scroll above. An arch cut through the wall, its head also roughly carved, with angels, provides access."

No individual entry for Newton Nottage found in the Domesday survey. Newman (1995) reports an octagonal font here but gives no other information on it. The History of the Ancient Church situate at Newton, Porthcawl in the Parish of Newton Nottage by D. Charles Davies (1938) [www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/NewtonNottage/SJB-Start] [accessed 15 August 2019] notes: "The Font seems to have been carved out of a solid block of fine-grained sandstone, and is of the followed dimensions : Height 2ft. 10ins.; Width 2ft. 8ins. ; Diameter of Bowl, inside, 2ft. 0ins.; Depth of Bowl 0ft. 11ins. The bowl is of a size suitable for the total immersion of the babe. It is set on an octagonal shaft, chamfered off to rest on a square base of 14 inch side, which again has a foundation stone- possibly of an older date - 28 inches square. The shape suggests that the date is later than the 12th century. Furthermore, the sandstone, of which it is composed, appears to be of the same type as that which forms the cantilevers supported the pulpit, and is also found in the fine arch at the west end of the nave - all of which are probably of the same period, namely late 15th century." The entry for this church in British Listed Buildings [https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/300011214-church-of-st-john-the-baptist-porthcawl] [accessed 15 August 2019] notes: "church originally built late C12 [...] Substantial refurbishment 1485-1495 [...] restoration of 1860-1 [...] Further restoration from 1903 and in 1927 [...] Low octagonal font with lead lining and renewed cover. Stoup by S door with stiff leaf decoration."
