Century and Period: 11th - 12th century, Norman
Font Notes:
Mentioned in Newman (2000) as a circular basin, "possibly Norman". Described in the Civic Trust Wales web site [www.civictrustwales.org] as a baptismal font of the Norman period that survived from the old church together with the 15th-century chancel screen. Thurlby (2006) writes: "The fonts at Llanelly, Llanfair Cilgedin (second font) and Llanfihangel Pontymoile may also be Norman." The RCAHMW entry for this church [cited in www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/222422/] [accessed 14 May 2012] notes; "St Mary the Virgin is a simple medieval church, possibly mid to late 14th century, probably partly re-windowed in the 15th century, repaired in the 17th century, and largely rebuilt in 1873-6 by J D Sedding [...] The church was made redundant in 1982 and was in a state of decay when listed in 1986. It has since been repaired 1986-8, and taken into care by the Friends of Friendless Churches.", but it does not mention a font in it. The font appears monolithic and consists of a cylindrical basin with a roll moulding around the lower end, the lower part narrower and plain; it must have stood on a circular shaft originally, but it may have been lost; the font looks very weathered and has damage to the upper rim; it stands in a corner of the nave, side by side the later font.
