Church Notes: present mid-19thC church replaced medieval one on same site
Reported in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 as "a font of Saxon construction". Described in Newman (2000) as a Norman font, the work of a local workshop [cf. Cognate fonts] whose specialty was "cup-shaped bowl decorated with concentric semicircles on a roll moulding." Described by Lord, in Diwylliant... (1998-2003), who assigns it to a Monmouthshire workshop responsible for the fonts at Abergavenny, Goetre, Betws Newydd and Llansantffraed. Noted and ilustrated in Thurlby (2006) [NB: the roll moulding which is more commonly placed at the meeting of the underbowl and stem on most round font designs is, however, placed on these fonts at the bottom of the basin side, i.e., above the area usually defined as the underbowl]
