Font Notes:
Described in Newman (2000) as an "unsually fine" Norman font, the work of a local workshop [cf. Cognate fonts] whose specialty was "cup-shaped bowl decorated with concentric semicircles on a roll moulding." He dates the octagonal stem and the base to the 15th century. Described by Lord, in Diwylliant... (1998-2003), who assigns it to a Monmouthshire workshop responsible for the fonts at Abergavenny, Goetre, Betws Newydd and Llansantffraed. Noted in Thurlby (2006) [NB: the roll moulding which is more commonly placed at the meeting of the underbowl and stem on most round font designs is, however, placed on these fonts at the bottom of the basin side, i.e., above the area usually defined as the underbowl]. Noted in Jenkins (2008) as Norman. The entry for this church in COFLEIN [https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/222145/details/bettws-newydd-church] [accessed 23 January 2020] notes: "Bettws Newydd Church is a well preserved and restored medieval parish church, probably founded in the twelfth century with a dedication to St Aeddan. The present fabric is fifteenth century in style and iIts most remarkable feature is the late medieval screen which is probably unique in the British Isles. [...] The church was restored in 1872"; no font mentioned in it. The entry for this church in British Listed Buildings [https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/300001962-bettws-newydd-church-llanarth] [accessed 23 January 2020] notes: "Font is like those at Abergavenny and Goetre. [...] Bowl font with rope-mould over band of half-round reeding on underside, hexagonal shaft and splayed base with 'malt-shovel' panels."
