view of basin - detail
Scene Description: notice the round little arch-heads painted below the rim -- the area of the main basin where it joins with the secondary basin appears to have been chiseled off; this was probably done when the single old font was transformed into a double-font by cementing the secondary basin and pedestal to it [cf. FontNotes]

Described in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966- ) simply as a stone baptismal font of the 12th century. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM72000730] as a baptismal font of the 12th century decorated with colonnettes all around. The font consists of a round tapering basin decorated with attached colonnettes all around, with leaf capitals but no bases; between the capitals are a number of motifs (leaves, rosettes) beneath the protruding flat moulding at the upper rim; the basin appears raised on a plain round base; there is an additional secondary basin with a drain in it, raised on a quadrangular pedestal base. There are traces of paint on several areas of the large basin, with some round arch-heads painted in red below the upper rim. The main basin has a flat wooden cover, modern, and there are round metal staples at opposite ends of the upper rim for the locking bar. This font, if the basin is approximately of the 12th century as generally claimed, has been reconstructed in the late-15th or 16th century, transforming the single font into a double by cementing to it the additional parts.
