Church Patron Saints: St. Aventin
Church Location: 31110 Saint-Aventin, France
Country Name: France
Location: Haute-Garonne, Occitanie
Directions to Site: Located 5 km W of Bagneres-de-Luchon, about 20 km NW of the Vall d'Aran, 52 km S of Saint-Gaudens
Font Location in Church: In a locked alcove to the left of the entrance [cf. FontNotes]
Century and Period: 11th - 12th century / 16th century, Romanesque? / Renaissance?
Church Notes: The church has some very interesting capitals inside and a freeze outside [cf. Images area], which narrate the story of St. Aventin. Other interesting pieces in this church: an odd stone Crucifixion, a Madaonna-with-Child, a statue of Isaiah, a Christ-in-Majesty tympanum, and at least one Roman ara incorporated in the external wall of the church.
Illustrated in Alcolea I Blanch (2008); at the time of the visit in 2007 this stoup was mounted in a corner just right of the other one. This second stoup [cf. Index entry for Saint-Aventin No. 1 and 3 for another stoup and the baptismal font] is described in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966- ) as smaller, made of white marble and ornamented with angels and birds; it is suggested there that it is a former Romanesque capital. On-site notes: this object is now placed in the locked alcove which houses the baptismal font and the church treasure; it rests on the ground, at the back left side, and was used at the time of our visit [July 2001] as a flower-pot [cf. Images area]; the visible side has what appears to be a child [putto] at play (?). [NB: full access to the interior of the alcove was not possible during our visit, but the 'angel' is putto-like, which would suggest a much later date for the object].
