The sixth bulletin of the Mémoires de la Société des sciences naturelles et archéologiques de la Creuse (1847) includes a long narrative by J.-F. Bonnafoux, in which he describes a visit to Nouziers on the occasion of the discovery of some early-Christian Gaul burials in the property of Miss Marie Coirier, adjacent to the parish church, which, to the delight of the visitors turned out to be of early date (11th-century) and great interest, precious in its simplicity; and, of equalle interest, "à côté d'une petite porte de service ménagée dans la muraille de gauche, on remarque un bénitier en granit, d'un travail qui doit remonter au moins à l'âge de l'église". Described in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966-) as a large granite stoup ornamented with human masks. The entry for Nouziers in the Pays de Gueret web site reports a font and a stoup both made out of original capitals: "chapiteau archaïque, à animaux affrontés tournant la tête, retaillé et transformé en fonts baptismaux ; un bénitier en granit paraissant être aussi un ancien chapiteau". The entry for Nouziers in La Creuse secrète [https://lacreusesecrete.dahut.fr/spip.php?article632] [accessed 23 February 2017] notes and illustrates this stoup: "un bénitier de granit sculpté avec masque humain".
