-- Interesting capitals at the western end of the nave; beautiful black Madonna and Child said to be of the 12th century, but looking more like a 16th-century work.
Font Notes:
Described in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966-) as a former capital now converted into holy-water stoup; it has a scene in which a sword-carrying angel (the source suggests St. Michael), leads a devil who seizes a small human figure (a soul?) by his hair; this ornamentation matches the themes and style of the other capitals in this church [cf. Images area]. On-site notes: the former capital does indeed match those others which can still be seen at the west end of the nave; the capital has one rough side -probably the one originally against the wall- while the others show (L->R): 1)small naked figure (woman?? child?) being held by the hair/head; 2)large naked figure (ribs prominent) holds the previous figure with his left hand, while the right hand holds what appears to be a thick rope which loops around his neck; 3)an angel with large wings appears to hold the other end of the rope, the head; to his left side, a vertical acanthus vine. The problem with the "St. Michael leading the devil..." reading of the scene is that the angel has no sword, the tall figure holding the object, whether rope or snake, or both. The inside well of the stoup is rectangular. The formar capital now stands on a late, baluster-shaped square pedestal.
