Font Notes:
This Romanesque piece may have been a former capital or part of a column of the old cloister re-used as holy-water stoup; it is usually known as 'le bénitier des Prophètes', for the four figures represented on it under a beautiful canopy. It is described in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966-) as a superb Romanesque holy-water stoup; the base with the statues of four Prophets, one of them David. Lasteyrie (1929) describes and illustrates this magnificent holy-water stoup which, he suggests, has been carved from a former pillar of the cloister: the quatrefoil-shaped basin is supported by four figures, in which Lasteyrie identifies David, Solomon, and the prophets Daniel and Isaiah. He regrets the choice of such coarse-grain stone for the stoup, especially since the quality of the carving is crude enough in itself. Described and illustrated in Beigbeder (1962), who identifies the figures as David -with the harp- Isaiah, Jeremiah and Solomon. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM43000194]: "Bénitier [...] Pierre [...] Pied et cuve sculptés [...] Quatre personnages sont placés dos à dos le long du pied, chacun sous une arcade sculptée à chaque angle de la cuve du bénitier [...] 12e siècle [...] H = 135 ; l = 44" [NB: one of the entries in Palissy [cf. supra] is annotated regarding the re-carving(?) of the beardless head]. [NB: we have no information on the baptismal font of this church] Illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: APMH00023266]: "Bénitier [...] 12e siècle"
