cleric - bishop's mitre
human figure - hand
Scene Description: when this photograph was taken in June 2001, the hand appeared to have lost part of the index finger, and pointing to the inscription with the middle finger, which is probably not what the carver meant to convey [NB: there is an earlier photograph in which the hand is complete, and in it the hand appears to be in the classical benediction position; alternatively the complete hand could be seen as pointing to the inscription with the inex and middle finger, a more acceptable premise.

Church Notes: The present church dates from 1688 but the stoup must have been moved from an earlier church; the source [cf. supra] illustrates also a "stylophore" lion, not uncommon in this area, probably of a similar date as the stoup. [NB: there actually two such lions on the outside, the usual pair, one holding a child, the other, a cub. There are also some interesting capitals which appear to match some of the ornamentation on the stoup].

Illustrated in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966-): chalice-shaped and round Romanesque stoup made of serpentine [kaolinite-serpentine subgroup]. The basin sides have a broad band illustrated with scenes (?) and has at least one head/face (?) on one of the sides, at the rim; the surface is very weathered and the relief very shallow, which makes the identification hard. On-site notes: there are actually two registers of ornamentation on the basin: one on the upper level of the basin, on the sides of the rim; the other around the middle part of the basins sides; there are three heads, however that protrude from the basin sides cutting into both registers. There is also an inscription that runs between the two heads. It is very difficult to determine what motifs are part of the original work and what others have been added through the centuries; some motifs appear more like added graffitti or crude scratched drawings. Here are the details as we identified them. First register: face - bell - cross -(Head1) - first inscription - (Head2) - second inscription - hand pointing to the inscription - (Head3) - baculum - Tau cross - bishop's mitre - face. Second register: 5-point star - two wrestlers - (Head 1) - cross under an agle roof? - rabbit/hare / Tau cross - (Head2) - man armed with spear - beast - hand from Head3 - (Head3) - moon - 10-point/ray sun in a circle. One side of the basin, about 1/5 of it or so, is blank; this may well be due to the original location of the stoup, probably aginst a wall or in a corner. The upper rim surface still has a hinge from an old lid. The pedestal of the base is round and the lower base square, both plain except for a couple of mouldings and a snake at one of the angles. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM05000297]: "bénitier […] […] Inscription".
