Font Location in Church: Inside the church
Century and Period: 5th - 6th century, Early Christian
Workshop/Group/Artisan: altar-font
Church Notes: present church 14thC -- there is one other altar stone preserved in this church, probably of the same early period as the font; it is rectangular and ornamented with a large 12-point star inside a garlanded circle; one of the corners is broken -- listed church in Mérimée [ref.: PA04000040]
Described in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966-) as a leftover of a paleo-Christian marble chancel; it is now [ca. 1966] built in as the front slab and surmounted by a flat altar-stone ["un autel tabulaire"], the whole being used as baptismal font; the illustration in the source shows a rectangular side of the basin (?): at the centre, a large round garland framing a Greek pattée cross, with the letters alpha (under the right arm of the cross) and omega (under the left arm); there is a Pascal candle to either side of the garland. The source [cf. supra] dates this piece to the 5th or 6th century. On-site notes: at the time of our visit [June 2001] the altar was already re-installed in the front of the church, back to its function as altar. Its frontal stone, a marble rectangle, is indeed ornamented as stated above, and coloured in red, green and gold. [NB: the early objects in this 14th-century church may originated in a nearby priory church dedicated to St. Vincent, and now disappeared].
