Country Name: France
Location: Ille-et-Vilaine / Il-ha-Gwilen, Bretagne
Directions to Site: In the canton de Bruz, arrondissement de Rennes
Font Location in Church: In its own enclosure
Century and Period: 17th century,
Church Notes: In the chapel of the Mesneuf manor house nearby there are interesting "engoulants" [=beem ends carved as animals with wide mouths] of canine appearance and "sablières" [=baseboard-like bands of often complex decoration typical of Brittany] carved with grapevines bearing fruit.
Listed and illustrated in Le patrimoine des communes d'Ille-et-Vilaine (2000) as a single-basin font and dated to the 17th century. It appears to be a composite font of a very crudely carved hemispheric basin mounted on two or three parts which obviously do not belong together. The font has been located in an enclosure made by two corner walls covered in high paneling (wainscoting) and a low railing with a gate. There appears to be a much more regular object outside the enclosure, probably a holy-water stoup.
