INFORMATION

FontID: 03946ART
Church/Chapel: Eglise paroissiale Saint-Aignan
Church Patron Saints: St. Aignan [aka Agnan, Aignan of Orleans, Anianus]
Church Location: 2 rue de l'Eglise, 95420 Arthies, France
Country Name: France
Location: Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France
Directions to Site: Located off (W) the D983 [aka route Nationale], 5-6 km S of Magny-en-Vexin, 25-30 km WNW of Pontoise
Ecclesiastic Region: Diocèse de Pontoise
Historical Region: Le Vexin français
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, NW corner of the nave
Century and Period: 11th - 12th century / 13th - 14th century, Romanesque
Church Notes: the site was already in use in Gallo-Roman times; later replaced since 690 by a Christian cult building of some sort; the bell tower and the nave are said to be of the same period, the 11thC (Le patrimoine des communes du Val-d'Oise, 1999, v. 2, p. 531); modified 15th, 16th, 17thC -- church listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00079986]: "11e siècle ; 12e siècle ; 16e siècle ; 17e siècle"
Described and illustrated in Léon Plancouard, «Une église romane du Vexin : Monographie de l'église d'Arthies», Commission des antiquités et des arts du département de Seine-et-Oise, Versailles, vol. 20,‎ 1900, p. 91-119: the font, located "A gauche de la nef en entrant ", is described as worthy of attention, being dated by several people -the author notes- to the 13th century, an estimation from "M. Le Ronne" putting them towards the end of the Romanesque period, although the author himself estimates the font to be probably of the 14th century, but re-tooled about ninety years since, and made of "pierre dure de Saint-Gervais"; the author further adds that the base appears to have been shortened, and gives the measurements as 92 cm in height and 50 cm in width; this author gives the shape of the font as "ovale", in this case oblong, rather than oval. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM95000027] [https://www.pop.culture.gouv.fr/notice/palissy/PM95000027] [accessed 15 May 2022]: "Très curieuse cuve baptismale ovale, en pierre dure, avec deux rangs de rinceaux au bord et au-dessus un rang de feuilles droites [...] 12e siècle [...] L = 87". illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: APMH047887] [https://www.pop.culture.gouv.fr/notice/memoire/APMH047887] [accessed 25 May 2022]: "Fonts baptismaux. 11e siècle". Listed and illustrated in Le patrimoine des communes du Val-d'Oise (1999) as an ancient font of about the 11th century. It is tub-shaped with an equally shaped but slightly wider base and raised on a square plinth. The upper side of the basin has a double band of lovely foliage, acanthus atop, palmette below. Brutal invasive installation of a side lock for the cover caused considerable damage to the carving.
