Stone holy-water stoup of original design listed in the Dictionnaire des églises de France (1966-), which dates it to the 11th century. The basin has eight bulges, therefore of octafoiled shape; every other lobe has its outerside carved like a grotesque face, while the others have geometric (circular) motifs; seen from the top the basin has the shape of an eight-petalled flower; under the bulges there is moulding; the stem of the base is octagonal with stops at the lower angles which turn the lower base square; There has been a modification made to the earlier(?) round lower base, which is now square; the addition was probably made to raise the height of the whole stoup to an acceptable height. The stoup is described in most other sources as Romanesque but the date in the Dictionnaire... [cf. supra] sounds too early for an object that has concave ribbing inside; 12th-century at the earliest, perhaps, as suggested in the listing in Palissy [ref.: PM71000375]: "Bénitier [...] Sur un fût octogonal, la cuve est cylindrique, ornée de figures [...] 12e siècle [...] H = 110". Illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: AP71W02023]. A baptismal font here is mentioned in Académie de Mâcon -Pôle Art Roman –27/12/2017 [www.academiedemacon.fr/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/71700_Farges.pdf] [accessed 15 February 2021] inside a 19th-century railing but no details provided for the font.
