INFORMATION

FontID: 03915RIO
Church/Chapel: Iglesia Parroquial
Country Name: Spain
Location: Segovia, Castilla y León
Century and Period: 13th - 14th century,
Described and illustrated in Abbad (1941): it has a general chalice shape although the basin itself is practically cylindrical with deep and wide ribbed pattern; the upper part of the ribs themselves is carved with several encircled motifs (Malta crosses and rosettes), as well as geometric and foliage motifs. The stem of the base is squat and with a large moulding, while the lower base is made of large opening acanthus leaves, as if the rest of the font were sprouting up from the interior of a bud. It is raised on a round plinth made up of several pieces. Abbad gives the most probable date as the 14th century but says that, at a stretch, it could be of the late 13th.
