Credit and Acknowledgements: We are grateful to the Institución Príncipe de Viana, to the photographers Larrión & Pimoulier, to Andrés Ortega and to Mikel Unanue for their photographs of this church and font; we are also grateful to Simeón Hidalgo Valencia for his information on theis font.
A cylindrical mounted font dated by Abbad (1941) to the late 13th or early 14th century -basing his dating on the lettering of the inscription- and described by him as a curious merge of Visigothic and Romanesque styles; his version of the inscription is handicapped in that the font was half embeded in the wall at his time [ca. 1941]. Described and illustrated in Uranga & Iñiguez (1973) [NB: this source has typos both in the text reference (p. 260) and in the index of plates (p. 267); in both instances the name is spelled "Nagurieta")] and in the Catálogo Monumental de Navarra (1990?- , vol. IV**: 477 and fig. 261). An inscription names the "rector" responsible for the font, "P. Lvpi" [NB: Uranga & Iñiguez tried to make sense of the phrase "eclesie de escvset" and suggest that it may refer to the village of "Escó", near Sos]. The rather shallow basin has two registers: the lower one is complete covered in an arcade of round arches, blind except for the figure of a bishop (?) under one of the arches; the upper register contains diamond or star motif, a fleur-de-lis, a potent cross and other such motifs and the inscription. Described and illustrated in Domeño (1992). Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Navarra (2008)] where it is adscribed to the Gothic period on account of the inscription. Simeón Hidalgo Valencia (e-mail of 2 May 2014 to BSI) suggets the existence of a workshop in the valleys of Izagaondoa, Lizoáin, Unciti and Urraúl Bajo, which would include the fonts at Artáiz, Cemboráin, Grez, Idoate, Lérruz, Najurieta, Reta, Zuazu, and others in the area. The old font has been altered, adapted for modern baptismal use, by adding an insert into the basin; this modern insert has several divisions to accommodate the holy water, the chrism, etc. The pedestal base is a cluster of columns with moulded bases. The wooden cover is round and flat. hinged in the centre, and has a lock on the upper part; the upper rim of the basin retains two (?) of the original (?) metal staples of the old cover.
