Scene Description: Source caption: "Château des Rohan in Mutzig. Elsass.

Baptismal font that was probably originally from the parish church at Mutzig, but had been removed by 1735 and served as planter in the rectory garden until 1977, when it was transferred to the municipal museum, according to Palissy [ref.: IM67016650]: "fonts baptismaux [grès] Cuve octogonale à décor en bas relief : arcature, animaux ou être fantastique [Salamandre, lion, sirène, oiseau, homme, agneau pascal dans un médaillon circulaire] sculptés sous des arcs et motifs végétaux (fleurs, grappes de raisin, feuillages) sculptés au-dessus des arcs [...] An octagonal sandstone font dated to the 13th century in Le patrimoine des communes du Bas-Rhin (1999). The large basin has an arcade of sixteen (?) Gothic trefoil arches all around; some of the arches have under them one of: salamander, lamb, lion, siren eagle and a male human figure; the spandrels of these arches are decorated with individual motifs, apparently leaves and fruit or cones. The base is also octagonal and very short and the edges of the upper rim ar damaged. The source [cf. supra] reports this font as having been at the Château in town named "des Rohan" after the ecclesiastical family who owned in the 18th century. The font served as ornament in the presbitery garden for a time until it was moved to the protection of the Musé Municipal de Mutzig, a wise move considering the soft stone of which is made, sandstone; the museum caption reads "de beroemde "Chassepot" doopvont van de dertiende-eeuwse stenen opgehemeld terminals, wapenschild van adellijke families van Merovingische objecten" [https://www.france-voyage.com/frankrijk-steden/mutzig-26662/museum-armes-4735.htm] [accessed 29 November 2023].
