Scene Description: this is probably the earliest of the two old images we were able to access; it shows the old basin set up as well-head, but obviously not connected to any well in its quaint 'attire'

Font Notes:
Former baptismal font basin located in the town-hall square; listed and illustrated in Palissy [ref.: PM67000158]: "fonts baptismaux [grès] mauvais état [...] 12e siècle". An earlier (?) photograph illustrates the entry in Mémoire [ref.: MHR42_2009672720012] and shows the old basin identified as "puits roman" and shown it set up as a well-head [NB: at the time of the Palissy entry the basin was used as well-head and support for the water pump in the town square, but the earlier (?) photograph shows it simply as a well-head]. An additional entry in Palissy [ref.: IM67011160] appears to capture a wider scope of information than the previous (?) one: "Fonts baptismaux provenant de l'ancienne église, déplacés plusieurs fois ; ils ont servi de puits au 19e siècle [...] Cuve circulaire, encastrée dans le sol. Des arcades en plein cintre sont sculptées sur toute la surface. La hauteur totale de la cuve n'est pas visible. Superstructure moderne en bois [...] 12e siècle, 13e siècle (?)". Le Patrimoine des communes du Bas-Rhin (1999, v. 1, p. 653) reports and illustrates a 11th-12th century sandstone basin serving as garden ornament somewhere in the town of Lochwiller; the badly eroded basin is filled with soil and flowers; the outer sides still show the traces of a blind arcade of round arches on them.
