Listed in Palissy [IM84000158]: "Calcaire : taillé [...] Ornementation (couronne : feuille, torsade, tore, ornement à forme végétale), représentation animalière (loup [blason des Agoult]) [...] Constitués d'éléments en remploi qui pourraient avoir appartenu à un monument funéraire [...] Armoiries (sculptée), inscription (illisible, sculptée) [...] Description du blason : blason des Agoult (loup), seigneur de Lourmarin aux 15e et 16e siècles [...] 15e siècle, 16e siècle (?)" Mentioned in the Phaidon guide to Provence (1986, p. 122) as "a beautiful 15C font" worth seeing. Ditto in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966- ).. The Inventaire général... (1981) describes this strange-looking object as made up of re-used parts which may have belonged to a funeral monument; it has the emblem of the Agoult [=wolf], seigneurs de Lourmarin during the 15th and 16th centuries; it also has an undeciphered inscription. The basin is rounded, looking like an old tire; the stem of the base is an octagonal pillar at the base of which there is a rope moulding and other carving; stands on a square lower base. One of the sides of the font has a carved protrusion which reaches from the top of the basin to the top of the lower base. On-site notes: the odd-looking object does indeed look like a re-cycled stone; the side protrusion has an upside-down shield bearing a squalid four-legged creature which may be an atempt at the representation of a rampant wolf; the shield is laid in a wreath of foliage. One could make out -perhaps- the digits "15--" in the inscription, which would date the object to the 16th century. There is a nice hemispheric wall-mounted stoup, probably of the same century [not listed - cf images]
