On-site notes: the hemispheric basin has a wide band of scroll and foliage ornamentation on the upper half, with an Agnus Dei inside one of the scrolls on the front side; the lower part and underbowl are ornamented with a blind concave arcade; the upper surface of the rim has a single groove all around. The short base has a cylindrical upper part on which appear a date (1595?) and two letters (the "A" is clear but the other one could be a "W" or omega, a "V" or even an "N" -- cf. Image section for an illustration]; the lower base is square with claw motif at each corner. Information available at this church reports a restoration of this font in 1826 and another in 1860; repairs are visible on the inside well of the basin; the old lid hinges are broken, which may have caused some the breakage. The entry for this church in the diocese web site [www.diocese-frejus-toulon.com/Barjols-Notre-Dame-de-l-Assomption.html] [accessed 29 July 2016] states: "vasque des fonts baptismaux, qui portent le millésime de 1395", but the reading of the date must be wrong, as the font uses Renaissance-style decoration.
