INFORMATION

FontID: 03771BAR
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Church/Chapel: Ancienne église collégiale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption / Eglise collégiale Notre-Dame dite aussi collégiale Saint-Marcel
Church Patron Saints: The Assumption of St. Mary
Church Location: rue des Jardins, 83670 Barjols, France -- Tel.: 04 94 77 00 43
Country Name: France
Location: Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
Directions to Site: Located off (S) the D554, 5 km S of Tavernes, 70 kms NE of Aix-en-Provence
Ecclesiastic Region: Diocèse de Fréjus-Toulon
Historical Region: Provence Verdon
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in a chapel on the S side, near the W door
Date: 1595
Century and Period: 16th century(late), Renaissance
Church Notes: original church here 1014; The Phaidon guide to the Provence..., 1986, p. 52 points out an interesting Romanesque relief from the former tympanum now at the antependium of the altar of St. Marcellus, in the left aisle: Majestas Domini with "hand of God" [cf. Images section for illustration] -- listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00081537] as a church of the 14th, 17th and 18thC
Font Notes:
On-site notes: the hemispheric basin has a wide band of scroll and foliage ornamentation on the upper half, with an Agnus Dei inside one of the scrolls on the front side; the lower part and underbowl are ornamented with a blind concave arcade; the upper surface of the rim has a single groove all around. The short base has a cylindrical upper part on which appear a date (1595?) and two letters (the "A" is clear but the other one could be a "W" or omega, a "V" or even an "N" -- cf. Image section for an illustration]; the lower base is square with claw motif at each corner. Information available at this church reports a restoration of this font in 1826 and another in 1860; repairs are visible on the inside well of the basin; the old lid hinges are broken, which may have caused some the breakage. The entry for this church in the diocese web site [www.diocese-frejus-toulon.com/Barjols-Notre-Dame-de-l-Assomption.html] [accessed 29 July 2016] states: "vasque des fonts baptismaux, qui portent le millésime de 1395", but the reading of the date must be wrong, as the font uses Renaissance-style decoration.
