Church Notes: The original church here would have dated from the establishment of the episcopal see here in the 6th century; possibly re-built in the late8t or early 9th by Charlemagne -- the present cathedral is listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00112936]: "12e siècle ; 14e siècle ; 15e siècle". Construction of the original church staterted in the 11thC.
Described in Davies (1962: 5) [after Louis, 1950]. Le Patrimoine des communes de la Nièvre (1999, v. 2, p. 715) reports that on occasion of the reconstruction works carried out after the 1944 destruction by bombs, three different stages of the baptistey were found, ranging from the 6th to the 12th century, and that it may actually have been already built on an existing Gallo-Roman site. Like other such early French baptisteries [cf. listed entries for Aix-en-Provence, Venasque, Fréjus, etc.] it had a vaulted ambulatory area around which were eight chapels, alternatively round and rectangular; there were water conduits for the filling and emptying of the font itself. The source claims that it is the only one known so far in the north of France. [cf. Index entry for Nevers No. 2]. On-site notes: we are most grateful to M. Sébastian Carcel for the access to the crypt and his friendly help during our visit]. The cathedral has a marble baptismal font of the 18th-19th century.
