Viollet-le-Duc gives this font, which he illustrates, as an example of 12th century fonts "de forme barlongue" [i.e., oblong], such as this and the much larger one at the cathedral of Amiens. The base consists of a cluster of three cylindrical columns in line, on very short square plinths. (Dictionnaire..., t. 5, 1875, p. 536-537 and ill. 4 on p. 538). Viollet-le-duc (ibid.) refers to a related 13th-century font at Limay, but we find them totally different; the other font of this shape in France -also mentioned in Viollet-le-duc- is the one at the cathedral in Amiens [cf. Index entry]. Described in Esquié (1880: 6n) as "une petite cuve barlongue qui date du onzième siècle" [=a little oblong font dating to the 11th century] in the church at Thouveil.
