INFORMATION

FontID: 03685MAS
Church/Chapel: Eglise paroissiale Notre Dame du Mas [now -June 2001- abandoned]
Church Location: 06910 Le Mas, France
Country Name: France
Location: Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
Directions to Site: Located off the D5, WSW of Aiglun, between Le Collet and Les Susses, in the canton and E of Saint-Auban, arrondiss. de Grasse, 32 km E of Castellane, 45 km NNW of Nice. The church itself is located on a height, just outside the village.
Ecclesiastic Region: Diocèse de Nice
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in an alcove of the S wall of the nave
Century and Period: 13th century, Romanesque
Church Notes: church here, first documented in 1351 and 1376, is believed to have been built in 12thC by monks from the Abbaye de Lérins -- listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00080759] with date in the 12thC
Thirion (1980) describes the church and gives its interior plan but does not mention the font. This font, claimed to be a 13th-century immersion font in the source [cf. infra], has a narrow, tall basin, shaped almost like a bucket, with a short stumpy base. It appears crudely executed and devoid of ornamentation. It has a conical wooden cover of a later date, painted with stars and stylised flowers, with two hinged sides which open as doors to provide access to the well. (Le Patrimoine des communes des Alpes-Maritimes, 2000, v. 2, p. 808). On-site notes: we were informed on our visit to Le Mas, June 2001, that the church is no longer used and remains locked without any access possible, but we did manage to get a view and a few awkward images of the font from the outside; these images confirm the information found in the bibliographic sources; the tall conical cover, painted in blue and gold, is still particularly striking [cf. Images area] [NB: the church was fully renovated and restored in 2006, and re-consecrated in May 2007 by the bishop of Nice]. As of 2006 the painted cover is no longer on the font; it has been replaced by a plain one of approximately the same size and shape.
