A brief illustrated entry in the Revue de l'art chrétien (1869) by Schaepkens reported the baptismal font of the church at Zonhoven "délaissés aujourd'hui dans la cour d'une auberge. Les grossiers dessins de l'une des faces accusent nettement l'époque romane", after which Schaepkens (ibid.) decries this "sorte de profanation" of ancient baptismal fonts in many places, taken out of the churches and put to the most degrading uses, "servant parfois aux usages les plus immondes". There are two entries in the Bulletin de la Société scientifique et littéraire du Limbourg related to the baptismal font at Zonhoven; the first (Bulletin de la Société, vol. 13 (1874: 252), is a communication about the font and its location at the time: "M. Noted and illustrated in Cloquet (1890), after Schaepkens; the characteristic upside-down lion head with foliage is described in Cloquet as a "tête bestiale". Noted and illustrated with a 1910 photograph in the BALaT database, KIK-IRPA, Brussels (Belgium) [no. 77732], with date 1101-1200, before the 1916 restoration. Listed in Drake (2002) as a Mosan font consisting of a square basin mounted on a multisupport base. Noted in Ghislain (1986) as one of a group of Mosan fonts [Achêne, Asselt, Bastogne, Gentinnes and Zonhoven] that include the motif of a feline head with branches of palmette and/or grape-vines stemming from its mouth. Catalogued and illustrated in Ghislain (2009) as the surviving basin of a baptismal font of the Namurois group, filiation de Saint-Séverin-en-Condroz, made of limestone (calcaire de Meuse) ca. 1155-1160, that had been found in a farm near the church being used as a "bac de pompe à eau" at the time [cf. supra]; it was restored in 1916.
