Cognate Fonts: Corblet mentions that De Rossi [cf. Notes on Authors] found the imagery in the mosaics of Saint-Dié analogous with that found on the "vase baptismal du musée Kircher". See also the Index entry for the Early-Christian site at Mukheitem, Jabaliyah, in Palestine, for related mosaic ornamentation [rivers of Paradise, etc.]
Church Notes: [NB: the town of Saint-Dié suffered massive destruction at the hands of the retiring German army at the end of the Second World War. It is not known what, if anything, remains of the mosaics from the old baptistery]
Font Notes:
Corblet reports that a mosaic depicting the four rivers of Paradise was found near the cathedral, in a part now annexed to the bishop's palace (évêché). The site is presumed to be that of an ancient baptistery. The mosaic has the four said rivers forming a lake in which swim marine monsters and whose borders are occupied by fish and birds. Corblet informs that De Rossi [cf. Notes on Authors] has remarked the striking analogy he found between this imagery and that of a "vase baptismal du musée Kircher". (Corblet, 1881-1882, v. 2, p. 72). [NB: as pointed out in the Cognate Fonts section of this record, we found a personalised depiction of the rivers of Paradise in the mosaics of the mid-6th century sunken baptismal font at the Palestinian site of Mukheitem, in the commune of Jabaliyah -- cf. Index entry]
