FontID: 03635PRI
Object Type: Baptistery
Church/Chapel: [disappeared baptistery at Primuliacum / Primiliacum]
Church Location: location uncertain / not identified]
Country Name: France
Location: Dordogne, Aquitaine
Directions to Site: The present location of the ancient site "Primiliacum / Primuliacum" is not known with certainty; Bonin (2006) gives Prémilhat nr. Montluçon, Allier. Corblet suggests as possible either Périllac, "hameau du canton de Villeneuve d'Agen" or, perhaps, Premiliac, "hameau du canton de La Nouaille". The baptistery was located between two churches. The location of Saint-Sulpice-d'Excideuil, another possible location, is off the D77, E of the N21, about 40 km NE of Périgueux [cf. FontNotes]
Font Notes:
Corblet (1881-1882) relates that Sulpice Sévère, saintly bishop of Bourges, had two churches built separated by a baptistery in Primiliacum, a site whose present location is unknown [cf. Directions for possible locations]. Saint-Paulin, bishop of Nole, composed, at Sulpice's request, a number of inscriptions, of which one, a long twelve-line stanza, is recorded in Corblet (Ibid.) Elorriaga (1998: 521) mentions a text from the inscription at the baptistry of Primuliacum, in the Gaul, the text supposedly by St. Paulinus of Nola (d. 431). The Digital Atlas of the Roman Empire entry [http://imperium.ahlfeldt.se/places/42671.html] [accessed 23 August 2023] suggests "Prémilhac?", in the "Commune Saint-Sulpice-d'Excideuil", in Dordogne [WGS 45.37614, 0.99695]. François Baratte's Les inscriptions dans le décor des églises paléochrétiennes : l’exemple de Paulin de Nole à Cimitile [https://books.openedition.org/cths/812?lang=en] [accessed 23 August 2023] gives the baptistery location in vague terms but in the area of Toulouse: "baptistère que [Sulpice] Sévère fait construire à Primuliacum, près de Toulouse, en Gaule". [NB; needs further investigation to ascertain source, etc.]
