Font Notes:
Corblet (1881-1882) reports that "M. Ernest Breton considère comme un baptistère du IXe siècle l'octogone de Montmorillon", but Corblet himself leans towards the more shared opinion among "la plupart des archéologues" that it is nothing more than a funerary chapel. (Corblet, 1881-1882, v. 2, p. 68). The building discussed appears to be either the one identified in another source as "a funerary chapel in the courtyard of the old Maison-Dieu" which the guide dates to the 12th century, or another building in the same location, an octagonal building which the guide describes as "another 17C octagonal edifice which was probably a calefactory". (France: a Phaidon Cultural Guide, 1985, p. 400-401)
