Corblet (1881-1882) reports Saint-Andéol's [cf. Notes on Authors] discovery that the Martyr's well in the crypt of Saint-Irénée was originally a baptismal "font". This font, which is depicted in Corblet as a rectangular, box-like object -not unlike the Greek font at Sandringham- was buried in the ground of the subterranean church, and it sat on a base of sand and gravel, which easily drained the water. It was later filled with the bones of the Martyrs of Lyon and, from then on, it was thought to be simply a well in the crypt. (Corblet, 1881-1882, v. 2, p. 66-67)
