Corblet reports that, before the demolition works around the church of St-Laurent, a wall about a meter tall was still left of an ancient baptistery. According to his source [cf. Notes by Authors], the baptistery was cruciform (Latin cross), with four apses, the water source being in an adjacent square hall on the north side. (Corblet, 1881-1882, v. 2, p. 63). On-site notes: a baptistery said to be from the 3rd-6th century has been excavated in the grounds of the old bishopric of Grenoble. A maquette in the museum [cf. Images] gives an idea of what is supposed to have looked like. The sunken font [cf. Index entry for Grenoble No. 6] is the only part that remains, although much of the covering stone no longer exists. Ferguson (2009) gives the depth of the font at 50 cm.
