Described and illustrated in Abbad Ríos (1957) as a quatrefoiled cauldron-like basin with large scallops -resembling the leave of an artichoke- at the underbowl and dated to the 13th century. The Gran Enciclopedia Aragonesa (1980) erroneously gives the same date and description for both the font and the holy-water stoup: "Las pilas de San Esteban de Sos son también del siglo XIII, con soporte y pie con bolas, y copa en forma de cáliz, con amplias hojas." [cf. Index entry for Sos del Rey C... No. 2 for information on this holy-water stoup] Garcés Abadía (2001) states that this font is made of two separate parts: the 12th-century square base and the 8th-century basin. He adds that, according to popular tradition supported by some documents ["algunos documentos"], Ferdinand of Aragon, later to marry Isabel of Castille, was first baptised in this font on March 10, 1453, and later received a solemn baptism in La Seo of Zaragoza on February 11, 1453, almost a year later [NB: during a recent [Dec. 31, 2003] interview with this author -who is also the parish priest at San Esteban- he informed BSI that the font had been originally located at the southwest corner of the nave, by the old small door that existed there and that is now blocked; the font was moved in the 1960s to one of the new chapels created in the 16th century when the building was expanded and several chapels were created outside of the older nave, between the buttresses]. At the time of the Catálogo..., [i.e., ca. 1957], it was mounted atop a large three-step plinth, whereas in the recent [2001] illustration in Garcés Abadía, the same font appears mounted on a single rectangular plinth which resembles the priest-stones on which many English fonts stand. The dating of the basin to such an early date is probably too ambitious, being more likely of the 12th or 13th century, or even the 14th century. Noted and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Aragón (Zaragoza, vol. 2, 2010)
