Church Notes: Santa Maria is first documented 1070, but may have existed earlier [a document dated 1061 is believed to be false] -- According to Oliván Baile (1974: 122ff), the church is all that remains from the old monastery founded in the late-11thC in the time of countess Doña Sancha, sister to the king of Aragon and great protrectress of the monastery where she was buried at her death.
Font Notes:
Spectacular feat of recycling, is how this stoup has been described: two Romanesque capitals, inverted, one with foliage ornamentation, the other with human figures, on which is piled a hemispheric basin, a tall stem and, then, two other capitals, like the ones below, one with foliage ornamentation, the other with vegetal motifs [a/p description in the Gran enciclopedia aragonesa, 1980-1983, v. 10, p. 2667]. Described and illustrated also in Oliván Baile (1974: 126-129): the stoup itself serves as the base for a cylindrical pillar which goes from its basin to the beam of the choir. The author describes the composite work as a beautiful object and suggests that the parts date to the foundation of the monastery, the capitals probably from the ancient -now disappeared- cloister or another part of the original building. [NB: a similar stoup-cum-pillar exists also in the parish church of St-Marcellin in La Salle-les-Alpes, Hautes-Alpes dept. -- cf. Index entry for Salle-les-Alpes Nos. 1 & 2]. The composite structure existed still at the time of Olivan Balle's report [i.e., ca, 1974] but the stoup was separated from the column at some point in the recent past; the stoup stands now [2002] by itself. [cf. Index entry for Santa Cruz de la Seros No. 1 for a medieval font in this church]
