Church Notes: According to the Inventaire général... (1978) the Chapelle Saint-Michel housed the municipal museum of Saverne between 1858 and 1967; at the latter date it restored, reconsecrated in 1969 and transformed into a baptismal chapel.
Corblet (1881-1882) simply mentions an antique font at the museum in Saverne; it is most likely the font which was located at he "musée installé autrefois dans la chapelle Saint-Michel" but was "de nouveau consacré au sacrement du baptême dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle" and restored to the serve as the baptismal font of the church of Notre-Dame-en-sa-Nativité. (Le Patrimoine des communes du Bas-Rhin, 1999, v. 2, p. 1139). It is an octagonal chalice-shaped font with busy Gothic foliage motifs all over the basin; around the upper border it bears an inscription [cf. Inscription] which informs that the donor was a priest, Paul Hock, and bears the date "1475", a fact underlined by the shield on the underbowl. There is a very pronounced moulding in a manner of centre ring and a square base adorned with rosette[s?]. [cf. other Saverne fonts listed in the Index] [NB: the chapel itself, Chapelle Saint-Michel, on Mont Saint-Michel, outside Saint-Jean Saverne, is documented by the early-12th century as a hermitage of some sort, and in the 14th century as a place for the cult, but we have no information on whether or not it had baptismal rights and a font]. [NB: cf. BSI entry for Saint-Jean-Saverne No. 2 for the other entry in BSI]
